In a survey of over one hundred national insurance companies, most of them will not cover secondary damages regarding leaks and drain back-ups.  A sampling of 63% of the home insurers found that water-related losses had totaled $1.7 billion between 1997 and 2005.  The average cost of a water claim nearly doubled in the last four years.

Water is the single most common cause of household damage according to a nationwide analysis by Safeco Insurance.  The biggest culprits are water heaters and washing machines.  Households with water damage spend an average of $5,000 for each episode.
